Hoh Rain Forest, Olympic National Park, Washington - 2003
Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is home to one of the world’s few temperate rain forests along the Hoh River. Lush shades of green are everywhere, from the moss that carpets the forest floor to the enormous moss-draped limbs of the big-leaf maples. Roots from red cedars, Sitka spruce, and hemlocks offer hikers a foothold along the cushioned trail. A foot bridge surrenders to the forest. Ferns and banana slugs may also be seen along the way. As the trail nears the Hoh River, visitors may observe herds of elk. |
