A Walk in the Woods

Indian Pipe

Description : Monotropa uniflora – This plant is also known as the ghost plant. It is not a fungus, as I first suspected. It is a non-photosynthetic flowering plant. I discovered this little jewel one morning while I was walking through a woods heading for Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on the southern tip of Acadia National Park. Even though it is only about 1 to 2 inches tall, it’s bright white ghostly color caught my eye in the thick forest. I would like to thank fellow science teacher, Kirk Janowiak for helping me identify this specimen.
